HALL HISTORY

The Republic Town Hall & Opera House has a long lineage of community history reaching back 135 plus years. This two-story, Italianate style, brick building contains a banquet room, kitchen, and smaller meeting rooms on the ground floor as well as a full-size opera house, complete with theater stage and balcony upstairs. The Republic town hall and Opera House has been at the heart of Scipio Township and the Village of Republic since its construction in the late 1800’s.

The “Town Hall” was opened to the public on Christmas eve, December 24th, 1884 and was said to be one of the finest structures of its kind in the county and surrounding area. It quickly became the center of the community hosting local government and organizations, as well as offering entertainment and events. Musical performances, holiday balls, stage theater, dances, medicine shows, galas and civil war veteran’s reunions were just a few of the events seen in the newly constructed brick Town Hall.

The Hall has served many purposes over the years from offering theater and stage entertainment to an interim school building and was even utilized as part of the funeral proceedings in the great Republic B&O Train Collison of 1887. Although growing in years, it always remained a treasured and valued center point at the heart of the Republic and Scipio Township community.

In order to keep the building in good standing, preventative maintenance and repair have been necessary throughout the life of the Hall, including the addition of the front awning which was added in the early 1900’s. Substantial attention was given to the hall in 1976 in conjunction with a local bicentennial celebration of America’s independence. Paint, flooring, balcony reinforcement and gas heaters were just a few of the upgrades at that time. The black and white photo below is from a news article hi-lighting the work done for the 1976 bicentennial celebration.

During the 1980’s and into the 1990’s the Town Hall continued to be a rental space for events such as graduation parties and receptions as well as a meeting place for local government and fraternal organizations such as The Lion’s’ Club and The Knights of Columbus. The building also housed Village Council chambers and police headquarters. By the early 2000’s however, the layout and capacity of the building challenged its hosting abilities in comparison to other nearby locations with more modern designs and updated amenities.

In 2018, with very little activity happening in the Hall, a newly founded grass roots, community development group, Reviving Republic (click link for more information), took on the challenge of spearheading a renovation project for the Republic Town Hall and Opera House. Creating partnerships with the Mayor’s office, Village Council, Scipio Township and The Scipio Republic Area Historical Society, Reviving Republic began implementing local fundraising and activation programs. By the end of 2019 enough funding had been raised to contract a Structural Engineer who, through exhaustive investigation, deemed the 135 year old building structurally sound. Unfortunately, for a large portion of 2020 and 2021, the Covid -19 pandemic ground planning efforts to a crawl.

Recently, however, efforts have gotten back into full swing. A Town Hall Advisory Committee was created and efforts have been made to connect with architects, contractors and grant writing specialists to develop a plan for the renovation. In 2022 a spruce up of the first floor Banquet Hall was implemented to help attract more rentals. Fresh paint, new blinds, curtains, and attention to lighting were a few of the facelift items that have indeed led to an uptick in rentals.

The full renovation plan of this historic Opera House building is an ambitious one, but one worthy of the cost and effort. Not only will the reactivation of this grand Hall produce a unique entertainment location for the county and surrounding area, it is also a giant leap forward in the preservation of local history and heritage. Please consider joining us in support of this noble cause. We have high hopes of someday hosting a rededication ceremony of this magnificent facility to the people of its community and hope to see you there!
